2*2 RAID1 disks on DELL XPS 430 - is it possible?

$

I have a DELL XPS 430 which is used mainly for data storage. It is configured with 2 * 1TB SATA HDD in RAID1 and on the resulting 1TB disk array (#1) on separate partitions I have OS Linux Fedora and storage data.

Can I add 2 more disks and configure them as another RAID1 array (#2) ?

My idea is to connect 2 * SSD SATA disks and install there the OS for fast boot etc. and keep the cheaper large HDD slow space for data only. For example:

2 * 60GB SSD in RAID1 --> disk array #1 60GB to install OS

2 * 1TB HDD in RAID1   --> disk array #2 1TB to keep data

Adding A SSD Drive To A New XPS 8900 - Let The Games Begin

I recently purchased a new XPS 8900 from Costco. I purchased a Intel 535 SSD 240GB and wanted to use it as the boot drive and I was going to format and use the 1TB that came with the PC as a storage device. I originally cloned the OEM drive to the new SSD drive. This didn't work so great - slow boot times - about 35 seconds.

I did a clean install of Windows 10 and tweaked the UEFI settings. Computer was booted without the OEM drive hooked up at this point. Boot time now is about 26 seconds. A little more than 18 seconds of that is playing with the BIOS/UEFI. None of the changes to the BIOS seemed to make any change. I was going to live with this, but I have 2 Win 10 laptops that are booting in 8 seconds and 11 seconds. I had pretty much everything loaded programs wise.

I next booted with the OEM drive hooked up and the SSD boot drive. I was going to format the OEM drive and on boot up I'm met with ePSA screen with Error Code 2000-0723 - Hard Drive - Drive error detected.. (which apparently isn't a code Dell recognizes?) Hitting Continue I'm at the desktop. I already had the Intel SSD Toolbox installed and had optimized the SSD drive. I did a quick diagnostic scan on the SSD drive and it reported no problems.

Restarted the PC and hit F12 to do the Dell Diagnostics testing. I now see a 2000-0142 error code. It indicates there is a hard drive failure with the new SSD drive. I reboot past the error message and do the Intel's Full Diagnostic Scan. Intel reports no issues. Hmm? I turn off the PC and disconnect the SSD and boot to the OEM drive. I get the same ePSA screen that popped up previously, hit Continue and I'm at the desktop. Reboot and run Dell's testing, the hard drive now passes and it passes all the other tests. I turned off the computer, removed the AC power cord, CMOS battery, and held the power button. Put it back together and clear the log files. I'm met with the same ePSA error code 2000-0723 screen.

I have another SSD - SanDisk 240GB. I disconnect the OEM drive and hook up Intel and the SanDisk. I cloned the Intel to the SanDisk and boot only to the SanDisk. Same ePSA screen pops up, but now Dell diagnostics passes all the tests. I run the Intel Driver Update Utility, which shows no updates. Device Manager shows all devices operational.

If you've made it this far, I appreciate it. :-)

Questions -

Dell sees something it doesn't like with the Intel SSD, but Intel says it's working fine. I could return it, but I'm thinking there's nothing wrong with the hard drive. I'm not sure what to do next.

How do you get rid of the ePSA warning? This pops up regardless of which hard drive boots.

Is there a different BIOS/UEFI that's available? I've pretty much exhausted the changes and 18 seconds seems like a looong time.

Thanks!

New XPS8900 - 2x2G drives in Raid1, want to add SSD as cache.

$

I just got new xps8900 with 2TB drive and 32G SSD cache, configured in Intel Matrix controller with SSD to accelerate HDD. I added another 2TB drive, deleted the old array and created 2TB raid1 array with the 2x2TB drives. Why - because drives fail, and recovery is so simple after a failure. I had to reinstall the compete system which ahs its own issues, but its now up and running.

Now I want to add the 32G SSD back as a cache, but I cannot figure out how top do that. Seems like I cant mix array types. The Intel management app, only shows "performance" tab and I cannot figure out how to get to "accelerate", which would allow me to configure the cache. Here is the history:

As shipped to accelerate: -array0 - 2TB HDD

                                                      - 32G SDD

As modified: - array - 2TB HDD (mirror)

                                - 2TB HDD (mirror)

                     - stand alone: - 32GB SDD

Desired: - array - 2TB HDD (mirror)

                          - 2TB HDD (mirror)

                          - 32GB SDD (cache)

Help, please.

Hello,

Is it possible to change the HDD of my Inspiron 2350 to an SSD? It came by default with a WD 1TB HDD + 32GB SSD for caching.

I'm looking to replace the small SSD with a 512GB SSD for OS and keep the 1TB for data. Is that possible?

Dell XPS 8500 New SSD not appearing as boot device

Hi,

So I recently bought a Samsung 850 evo SSD (250gb) with the intention of using it to store my OS/other important programs and using my old 2tb HDD for movies/docs etc. For the most part I've achieved this. I installed the SSD no worries, clean installed windows 8.1 on it (the old 2tb hdd was unplugged during this process) and did all of the optimisation etc. But I noticed when I booted it up again the boot speed was pretty underwhelming, so I decided to check the UEFI settings.

And this is where the issue is, looking at the boot options the new SSD doesn't show up in the hard disk menu. There are two options Option 1 [Windows boot manager] and Option 2 [My old hdd]. I tried unplugging my old hdd but that just left me with only the first option. So is there something I've done wrong or is option 1 actually my SSD? I'm at a loss at what to do at this point, please help!

P.S. My SSD does show up in the UEFI options under SATA port 0, just not in the boot options.

Thanks.

My Computer thinks Second Hard Drive is a CD-Rom drive

I have a Dell 8700 XPS 64 bit, running Windows 7.  Everything was/is working fine, except I installed the hard drive from my previous Dell Studio XPS 435 (I think--from 2007) that had died after our house had lost power.  In BIOS, it shows that it recognizes it as a hard drive, except when it opens in Windows, it says it's a CD-Rom drive.  When I click on it, it says it's not accessible.

I don't know for sure if the old hard drive was damaged, but I would think if it was, it wouldn't be recognized by BIOS or Windows at all--not that it would switch from being seen as a hard drive to a CD-Rom drive.

About the only thing I've tried so far is switching SATA ports, which hasn't done anything.  Any ideas?

2TB HD +32GB M.2 SSD Cache, Status:Incompatible in Intel Rapid Storage

I have an XPS 8900 with a 2TB HD +32GB M.2 SSD Cache. I get Status:Incompatible Usage:Unknown in the Intel Rapid Storage Technology Manage Tab for a Liteon 30GB SATA SDD. It seems that the 32 SDD is not being used as a cache.

This is happening after changing the SATA controler to AHCI in the BIOS setup so that my Samsung SSD 840 EVO 250GB would work better and doing a clean Windows 10 install using the 250GB SSD as the system disk.

Searching for this issue I get the impression that for the 32GB SSD to work as cache, I may need to set the SATA controller to RAID, but this may be incompatible with what I need for the 250 SSD.

Where can I find instruction for making the 32GB SSD work as a cache and still being able to use the 250GB SSD as the sytem drive?

My PC Checking results show that the mSATA 32GB drive needs to be replaced.  The manual tells me how to change the software.  What else do I need to do?  Or do I just install the new card and all will be OK?

Upgraded to W10, Inspiron no longer sees DVD drive

$

After updating my Inspiron 17R to Windows 10, it no longer sees the DVD drive.  It is not listed in File Explorer or Device Manager or Belarc.  The Belarc report I have from when the laptop was on Windows 8.1 lists the optical drive as "HL-DT-ST DVD+-RW GU70N"

The Dell wizard that scans the laptop to inform me of needed drivers does not even list on for it.  Also I'm not sure it would if it cannot detect the optical drive. My computer skills are rudimentary.

When I stick a DVD in the drive, it churns for a bit but does nothing.

All Microsoft updates have been installed with a major one recently.

Thank you for any assistance.

Dell Inspiron 3847 - 1x SSD, 2x HDD, 1x ODD

$

I am using a Dell Inspiron 3847. To the 1TB HDD and the ODD that came in the box I would like to add a second HDD of equal size or bigger and one SSD - so a total of 1x SSD, 2x HDD, 1x ODD.

The MB's SATA ports are marked SATA 0 and SATA 1 for HDD and SATA 2 and SATA 3 for ODD.

Can one of the SATA ports marked/designated for ODD handle a HDD instead?

What designates a SATA port as HDD or ODD? Transfer rate?  Assuming the SSD runs of SATA 0 or 1 , how bad would it be if one of the HDD would run of SATA 2 or 3?

Thanks, Patrick

Thanks, Patrick

I am having a strange issue where no video is displayed on the screen using my NVidia GTX 550 TI.

Only when the system completed booting up I get the windows login screen and from there on everything is ok. This issue only happens when windows is not loaded yet. when hitting the F2 to go in bios the screen remains black and no activity is being send to the monitor. Any ideas what is causing this?
