New XPS15 makes clicking noise

$

Hello!

My brand new XPS 15 (1 TB sata + 32GB ssd) makes some sort of clicking noises during usage (see attached audio file). You can hear the clicking from time to time, but it's not continous. I read on the internet that such clicking sounds mean a defect of the HD. I ran diagnostics but everything seemed fine. Anyone who has an explanation for this weird clicking?

Thank you
Kevin

AHCI versus RAID with 2TB HD + 32GB M.2 SSD Cache and 250 SSD

I got a new XPS 8900 with a 2TB HD + 32GB M.2 SSD Cache and I want to use a Samsung 250GB 840 EVO SSD I already had as the system drive. I would also put programs and files I use frequently in the 250GB SDD. The 2TB hard drive would store user files, music, photos and videos.

After reading in different forums, it seems to me that if I want to use the 32GB SSD as a cache, I would need to set the SATA controller to RAID. On the other hand, Samsung recommends using AHCI for optimum performance of the 250GB SSD drive and the RAPID mode available with Samsung Magician only works with AHCI.

I also read that RAID offers similar performance as AHCI for a single drive and that it can improve performance when using two drives as RAID 0.

I have 3 options:

1- Select AHCI, use the 250GB SSD in RAPID mode and leave the 2TB hard drive as a regular HD. The 32GB SSD would not be useful, it is too small as a standalone drive. This may be the simpler option.

2- Select RAID, use the 250GB SSD without the RAPID mode and use the 2TB hard drive as a RAID 0 with the 32GB SSD so that it works as a cache. This could have the advantage of speeding up the 2TB HD but I am worried it could slow down the system drive as compared to option 1.

3- Select RAID, use the 250GB SSD as a RAID 0 with the 32GB SSD and use the 2TB hard drive as a hard drive. The system drive could be faster than in option 1.

Can anyone tell me what option would be best?

Optiplex 9020 NVMe-aware?

I am considering getting a new NVMe M.2 SSD like the Samsung 950 PRO and a PCI Express M.2 adapter card (something like this) and using it as a boot drive in my Optiplex 9020. I understand that this requires support in the BIOS. Is the Optiplex 9020 BIOS capable of this? Does it require a BIOS update?

I have a HDD from a Dell Inspiron and I have inserted it internally to a Toshiba laptop. When I go to boot the disk it asks for the HDD password( which I know) but the problem is that I can't type the full password. The Toshiba will only allow 8 characters and my password is 11 characters. Could anyone tell my why this is, or ways to fix it?!?

Why Samsung Evo 840 SSD doesn't work on Latitude E5550

I replaced the HDD with Samsung SSD, changed the SATA operation to AHCI. The SSD is being detected in BIOS and when I try to install windows on it, the installation doesn't find the drive.

Does anyone know a way to fix it? I really want to use SSD instead of HDD as it's way faster

My fairly New Dell desktop inspirion icore7 PC

Hello,

I purchased a Dell icore 7 inspirion Desktop computer about year 1/2 ago and have been having issues with the usb drives ever since I purchased it. Anytime I do an update or anything on the PC through Microsoft it only seems to make things worse. Either way the PC came installed with windows 8. I've tried making back ups several times but nothing seems to work on the PC with allowable backup disc to be downloaded on my d drive so I have tried running past backups that I had created but I don't think they ever created appropriately. I am not so sure why you pay so much for a PC but then the PC doesn't come with backup discs.

So now I have a new issue and I am not IT expert at all but have done a little research before contacting you for assistance. I upgraded to Windows 10 - I recently allowed the most recent windows 10 updates to install. After installing them I began receiving errors stating my drives were offline but I could not reconnect my PC unless I had an administrator network password. I don't even begin to know what that is. Well now another issue has came about as of yesterday because my PC shut down and only restarted to the blue screen but will not allow me to even reset the PC.  What can I do if anything. I am in tears literally because I am a middle class citizen and do not have funds to go purchase a new PC or call an IT person to come and assist me. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE help me as my new computer won't even start...I do not have discs to reinstall or do factory reset and I would prefer not factory restoring if possible because I have allot of data that is hopefully still backed up on one of my external drives/possibly a usb but I am not even sure at this point in time if the backup worked since it seems to not have worked on any of the dics I tried backing it up on?

XPS 420 Vista Raid

Hello, Johnyik here: Have XPS 420 Vista Ultimate Multimedia box with raid 1, two 750 GB drives, of which, one is failing. My instinct is to upgrade/replace them with 1 TB drives but how is this done with existing Intel software, ie. can I add a single 1TB drive, copy it, then add a second and repeat procedure without add-ons?

Many thanks!

Johnyik

XPS 8700 - How do I install a third hard-drive?

I have a XPS 8700.  I'm trying to install an additional hard drive.  A Seagate 3TB SATA.  I've followed the step-by-step instructions in the Owner's Manual.  Pages 42, 43 and 44.  I'm getting stuck on page 44.

The fourth step: Replace the screws that secure the third hard-drive to the chassis.

I see the holes that are depicted in the manual.  There are two of them.  Both are surrounded by white plastic.  The holes are empty.  There aren't any screws to replace.  Am I doing something wrong, or do I have a computer with missing screws?

Insprion 5000 17.3" laptop not booting from SSD Windows 10

I recently purchased a Inspiron 5000 17.3" laptop and it came with a 1TB seagate drive, I successfully copied the image to a 500gb WD black drive and it boots fine. I then copied this 500gb WD black drive to a 500gb SSD Samsung Evo drive and the laptop won't boot from it. Any ideas?

I haven't tried booting from legacy yet, the bios sees the drive but when it boots up i get screen indicating Recovery your PC/Device needs to be repaired... etc

It doesn't make sense to me that my standard WD 500gb HDD works and not the 500gb SSD Samsung.

TIA

Inaccessible Seagate HDD

I have an HDD in my Asus G73JH laptop that I can not access. Windows 7 had stopped working so I tried to install Ubuntu after it stopped working and it seems it stopped the HDD from being accessible ever since. I currently have a new HDD running in my laptop with the old but it is running an unactivated Windows 10 and the old HDD is slowing down my laptop a fair bit whenever I do any process related to it. Such as trying to format it to access it but it never finishes and checking it for errors which also doesn't work. Oddly, the old HDD exists as Local Disk D: and Local Disk F:. I'd like to find a way to access the bad HDD so I can install Windows 10 onto it so that the digital entitlement activates it.

External HD with Connectland

HP died so got a Connectland housing to hook up the SATA HD to the new Dell.

According to Windows 8.1 book,  instruction booklet, and internet searches should be able to easily access the files on HD.

Well that did not happen.  Also had difficulty getting the Dell to see the external connection.  Had to reboot while the housing was powered on.

Any advice on why the files cannot be accessed?

Inspiron 15 HLDS +-RW GU90N drive failing?

Hello, I have a Dell Inspiron 15-3521 64-bit system with Intel Core i3 @1.90 ghz and 6.00 GB RAM running Windows 8.1 Home edition. Over the past three days I have been unable to get my cd/DVD RW drive to actually write or even format any media. My drive will read both CDs and DVDs just fine without a single problem. If I insert a blank CD or DVD, it recognizes that the disk is blank, but when I attempt to write to the disk, the action will not complete. I have tried to burn both data and audio, and neither works. My device is shown as working properly in Device Manager with no conflicts.

When I attempt to drag and drop files to burn I get this message:

"The disk wasn't burned successfully. Make sure that you have the latest firmware for your CD or DVD burner installed, and then try again"

ImgBurn just gives multiple write errors in its log and stops attempting to write.

So far I have:

Run Microsoft Troubleshooter - hardware changes were made, but problem persists

Uninstalled and reinstalled drivers

Checked for new driver - best driver is already installed (cdrom.sys)

Run boot diagnostic - no errors

Run Dell Online Diagnostics - all tests passed

Tried burning in safe Mode - cannot burn

Restored to a point where drive worked - cannot burn

Gone through Osprey's troubleshooter toolkit - cannot burn

Attempted to update firmware, but Hitachi-LG doesn't have any firmware updates (or firmware at all) for their GU90N drives

checked drive with NeroInfotool - drive shows as green and ready to use

In a last ditch effort, I went ahead and factory reset my laptop, but the problem is still there. I don't understand how every diagnostic says the drive is preforming properly, but it is not. Is this drive failing in some strange, undetectable way?

Thank you for any help or insight

Do new BIOS versions have a new number?

I'm still trying to resolve an issue described in an earlier post:

en.community.dell.com/.../19632125

  • My Dell Studio XPS 9100 will not boot when there is 4 TB drive installed internally.

My 2 TB internal data drive is starting to show signs of problems. So I bought a 4 TB WD Black drive, reformatted as two partitions and tried to install internally. The system hangs on the start up screen (never boots).

The same drive works fine installed in an external case, as does my 4 TB HGST.

Someone suggested I check to make sure I have the latest BIOS. When I did a clean install in Feb 2014 (when I switched to an SSD boot) I did in fact update the BIOS. I have version A04.

Today I went to the Dell support page, ran the system detect tool and it recommended that I update the BIOS. But the weird thing is that the file I downloaded (but did not install) is the exact same size and the same number (A04). According to the Dell site the update was July 2014.

  • If this were a new version, wouldn't it carry a new number. like A05?

In general I do not like messing the BIOS and I don't want to risk bricking my machine if this is indeed the same file.

Sandisk SD 164 Gb is losing files etc.

I recently purchased the Venue 11 Pro 7140 which is supposed to be able to handle 164Gb SD cards. No matter what I try and which format I use, as soon as I load it into the machine or access it via a reader, files are either lost and/or corrupted and, at times the card becomes unreadable and I have to reformat, using SDFormatter.

I have no problems with several 64Gb cards, but it cannot handle 3 different 164Gb cards that performs perfectly well on a desktop, a laptop and notepad.

Has anyone come across this problem and, is there a solution/s?

Cheers,

JB, Oz
