External USB 2.0 Hard Drive Problems

I have a Western Digital 2TB USB External Hard Drive connected on my Dell Inspiron 620MT. The Drive Randomly crashes when being accessed or written to and keeps failing the standard Dell PC Tests. I have already changed the drive for a new replacement unit from Western Digital but still get the same failures. I know from looking on the web that lots of other users have the same problem and with a variety of different USB Drives/PC's. I have checked the USB Hub and the USB Ports, they report as working OK. I have run the Dell PC Test for just the WD External Drive and it passes the random seek test but then bombs out on the Funnel Seek Test. The Dell PC Full Test Passes everything except the USB Hard Drive Is OK I have also run a full Western Digital test on the drive using WD's own drive test software, the drive passes all tests OK and I have double checked it by also running Seagates full drive test software, again it tests OK All the symptoms seem to point to a problem with the I/O between the Intel USB Controller and the USB Ports but I cannot work out why this is happening. Finally, I have tried plugging the USB Hard Drive into all Eight USB Ports and still get the same issue, I have also looked the latest USB Windows 7 64Bit Update that applies to USB Ports but it only applies to USB 3.0. I have also turned off all the Power Options so that the USB Ports are always on and never sleep, I did that because I initially thought it might be a timeout error between the computer coming out of Hibernation and the USB Ports waking up. My question now is what to try next, if anyone can help it would be appreciated,. Kind Regards Mike
