I have an XPS 410 running Vista 32 bit, BIOS ver 2.5.0 (5/24/07), and a 500GB HDD in SATA0. I purchased a WD Caviar Green 3TB internal drive for my second HDD slot for data only (after reading that Vista 32bit can support these large drives for data only.) However, when I installed the drive (SATA1) and booted, I can only see 746.39 GB in Disk Management. Specifically, it says “Disk 1 Basic 746.39 GB Online” in the box to the left, and “746.39 GB Unallocated” in the bar/box to
the right. I started this process a week ago and am at a standstill. Last week I believe that I right clicked in the bar/box to the right and got some questions about partitioning (MBA vs. GPS) – I believe I must have selected GPT because I no longer have the option to select which type. If I right click and select properties, it states GUID Partition Table (GPT). However, I only see 746.39 available to partition if I start the process of “New Simple Volume.” I’ve read many forums about this topic, and it seems I’m not alone. However, I don’t know what to do now. I thought it was going to work with Vista 32 bit as a data drive and with GPT partitions. Do I need to update the BIOS (if so, how do you do that safely?) or do I need some other driver? I read somewhere about Intel Rapid Storage Driver, but I don’t know if that’s something I would need. Any help would be much appreciated.
