replaced hard drive - need to format??

I hope I've posted in the right area.

I've just replaced the hard drive in an Inspiron N5010, with exactly the same model of drive that came out of it.  Once drive was installed I inserted the first of two recovery disks into the cd rom. I then get to the Dell Data Safe Welcome page where I have the option to restore backup or factory recovery.  I selected to set back to factory recovery, after which I get a message that the HD size is not supported for this process.

Does anyone know why I'd get this message since the new drive is same model as one just replaced? 

Is there a way to work around this?

Do I need to format the hard drive before starting this procedure?  If so, how do I accomplish that when the recovery disk shows HD not supported?

At some point today, I was able to run diagnostics and all is O.K. - the hard drive passed (I believe it was a "short test").

Any help appreciated!
