Dell Studio XPS 8100 - adding HDDs - how connections?

Hi,

My XPS 8100 came with 1 HDD and one DVD drive. I am planning on adding some HDD and seek some clarification - hope you can advise.

I want to add a SSD and make it main OS drive. Use existing HDD as a data drive and add another drive either as a separate drive or OPTIONAL as a RAID 0 for improved throughput for video editing.

So I am planning following:

  1. Clone existing HDD to the SSD
  2. Take out HDD
  3. Put SSD in the lower 5.25" bay
  4. Connect SSD power and data wire from SATA 1 port (first SATA port on the motherboard) that was previously used by the HDD
  5. Reboot and verify all normal (I don't have to re-install the OS right?)
  6. Put old HDD in bottom 3.5" bracket, connect it to power and SATA 2 port on the motherboard and connect power (using the same power cable that goes to the SSD as it looks it provides to power connectors on the same wire (does not require a separate wire, right?)
  7. Put a new HDD (third drive) in the remaining 3.5" bracket, connect power and SATA 3 port on motherboard (may need to move DVD to SATA 4 port) (does it matter which drive - HDD, SSD, DVD, RAID - goes into which motherboard SATA port or it can all be controlled from the BIOS regardless?)
  8. OPTIONAL RAID
    1.  Ctrl+I on reboot and set the two HDD as one RAID 0 array, to speed up video editing (not sure if using Premiere Pro I benefit more from SSD + RAID HDD *or* SSD + HDD + HDD setup...
  9. Move my user data files from the cloned SSD to the new HD (keep only OS and Program Files on SSD)
  10. Delete user data files from SSD
  11. Make settings changes in Window to let it know the correct location of user libraries (not sure yet where/how to do this but I assume this step is required so Windows know where the special user "libraries" should reside)

Does this make sense???

Thanks!
