USB 3 Drive on New 5537

I'm  new to the forum and I have a new Inspiron 15R (5537) that has a problem. I'm hoping that someone can provide some info on how to resolve this.

I have a USB 3 external drive(LaCie Rugged Triple, 500 GB) that will  not work when plugged into a USB 3 port but will work fine when plugged into a USB 2 port.

Recommendations on how to resolve this will be appreciated.
