Swapping HDD

Yesterday while I was on the computer, our power went out in the area. About two hours later, power was restored. I attempted to power on the computer, but it wouldn't. Nothing happens ; no lights, sounds, or anything. Dead. I took the PC (Dimension 5150) into a local store (London ***) to check it. The tech/salesperson suggested that the power supply was damaged by a power surge. The PC was plugged into a surge protector. They did hot have a power supply compatible with the system. I took the PC to another store across town. Their dedicated tech had a look. Power supply was okay, but the mother board was blown. So, I purchased a VanTec NexStar hard drive dock. They removed the HD from the PC. I returned home. I hooked the HD dock to a second PC (Inspiron 530), and plugged in the HD from the old PC. Works, but I need to have this PC run as the old PC. I tried setting BIOS to boot from the HD dock as it is supposed to work, but fails with Windows error. Not doable? Only other solution I see until I purchase a new PC is to swap the HD from the Dimension 5050 for the HD in the Inspiron. Can this be done? This is really urgent and I'm desperate as the broken PC is a work PC, and I'm losing money (and clients) hand over fist.
