Can a virus/Trojan/worm damage a hard drive?

About a month or so ago I got a virus or worm or something on my system.  It was the Justice Dept. worm, and if you're familiar with it, it pretty much locks your system up but good.  I successfully removed all traces of it (I'm pretty sure at least) but now I keep getting the dreaded blue screens.  My Dell PC checkup hardware scans fails my HD in Read Tests and Self Tests, and says my disk may be failing.  When I check the blue screen diagnostic on the PC Checkup, it gives a different reason for each time (it's happened 4 or 5 times now), but often the suggestions it gives for troubleshooting also mentions hard disk failure.  Granted, my system is about 3 years old, but I never had a spot of trouble until I encountered this virus.  Can a virus actually do damage to the HD?  A checkdisk says I may have some bad sectors, and if I run a fix it seems to do alright, for a while at least.  I'm going to replace the drive at any rate, but was the virus the cause?

Any help would be appreciated.
