I have a defective hard drive for my Dell OptiPlex which has a PSID code which I understand allows it to be erased securely with "Instant Secure Erase". The hard drive is under warranty and I would like to return it for replacement but I need to erase it securely. I tried using DBAN but it stated it was erased with errors and so now I don't know if it is erased properly. I read that "Instant Secure Erase" can erase even defective hard drives securely. What is the step by step procedure to use "Instant Secure Erase" on the defective hard drive that I want to return. The defective hard drive has been removed and the DBAN procedure erased enough that the computer will not boot from the hard drive. Do I need to install the operating system on to the hard drive to use "Instant Secure Erase" or can I install the hard drive as it is and use some kind of command prompts.
