Putting an existing XP hard drive into Optiplex 780

I had on old system that ran Windows XP Pro with SP3.  The system died. I have systems running Windows 10 and Windows 7 but there is some software that runs on my old XP 32 bit system that I am either unable to purchase in newer versions or unwilling (I am a retired computer science instructor and some of these packages cost $1000's. Since I am no longer teaching I am simply unwilling to put out that kind of money on software that I have that functions). Some software  I have put in new systems with virtual machines but there are still some pieces that plan to keep using in XP.

I bought a Dell Optiplex 780 to stick the old hard drive in. It came with a hard drive configured with Windows 7 and it worked with no problems.  The system is SUPPOSED to be set to run XP but even before I attempted this I put my old drive on one of my other systems and downloaded all the proper XP drivers.  I do not get that far.  When I try to boot the system to the XP drive it will bring up the original XP screen then it flashes a blue screen and quickly reboots. You cannot read the blue screen.  It brings up the screen to boot to safe mode, safe mode with network support etc., but  no matter what I choose I get the same result.

I went to the BIOS to check on boot options and when you get to disks it gives the choices of RAID and Legacy etc.  The info on the screen is not adequate for me to decide what setting I need. I am using a Western Digital  2 TB WD20EARS.

I suspect that is not the issue since it finds the drive well enough to get the original XP screen but ....

Looking for ideas. Any suggestions for the settings for Legacy and such and any ideas how to either be able to read the blue screen or how to get past that point?
