New Dell XPS 8900 stating not enough storage.

I have the Dell xps 8900 with 256GB SSD + 2TB Hard Drive, 32GB DDR4.  I'm getting an error message when attempting to put pics/music or anything on the desktop I get a message there is not enough space on the computer and to remove files and empty trash.  Apparently everything is defaulting to the C drive which is the smaller drive . I'm told it's for the operating system so things will boot up faster. This is great as I want it to be fast but I need everything else I to default to the larger 2T drive.  I'm told this isn't possible and I don't understand.  Why would I have this small drive for operating system to boot faster if everything else is defaulting to this same drive only to slow it down which seems to defeat the purpose.  (I know very little about computer but this is where reasoning takes me.)

I'd like for the operating system to stay on the SSD drive so computer will boot fast and everything else to default automatically to the 2TB/D drive .  Is this possible?

Thank You for any input!
