XPS 8700
Win 7 64-Bit
External USB 3.0 Hard Drive
Problem:
Chkdsk when scheduled to run at boot on the external usb 3.0 hdd does not run at boot, it skips chkdsk on boot and continues normally to load windows.
Chkdsk does run online, when windows 7 is running and no problems are found with the external hdd. The problem is trying to get windows 7 to run chkdsk at boot on the external usb 3.0 hdd.
Windows 7 does run chkdsk successfully when scheduled on boot on the internal hdd, the problem is with running chkdsk on the external usb 3.0 hdd at boot when it is scheduled to run at boot.
Solutions tried:
All drivers appear to be update. Also, Dell detect says system is up to date.
Run msconfig and choose selective startup (unchecking all services and startup programs), restarted, but chkdsk would not run at boot when it was scheduled.
But, when I started computer into safe mode with command line, I was able to successfully perform a chkdsk on the external usb 3.0 hdd at that time using the command line.
Question:
Why can't windows successfully perform a chkdsk at boot when it is scheduled by windows to do so? It appears windows, when it begins booting with a chkdsk is scheduled, will simply skip the chkdsk and boot normally into windows.
FYI:
I also tried perform a defragmentation at boot using Perfect Disk, but it also skips the defrag at boot. PerfectDisk support says it uses the same process as chkdsk, so if chkdsk cannot run, then Perfect Disk also cannot run.
I have been able to rule out the external usb 3.0 hdd as defective. It is not. The external hdd manufacturer has been able to determine the problem is not with their hdd.
So, I am looking to Dell to help with this.
