My XPS 8700 from 2013 has a SSD that is the boot drive and a 3 TB hard drive that I use to store data. Because the executable files are on the SSD, I did not appreciate that the hard drive was failing slowly until 1) on restarting the system the hard drive did not initialize until I rebooted and 2) that a couple of Adobe programs, Lightroom and Photoshop, started slowly or in the case of Lightroom started throwing error messages about another server process running. Then Lightroom corrupted its own catalog, Dropbox could not find its folder and on running the Dell Support Assist utility the hard disk failed. Fortunately it was fully backup up to my old HP Home Server and after replacing the disk and restoring the data, everything worked fine.
When I had previous problems with hard disks they were catastrophic, not slow fails like this.
